Adaptive Rowing

Since 1991, Rio Salado Rowing Club has worked to establish the sport of rowing in the Arizona desert.

mikeb3We're now partnering with community organizations to develop an adaptive rowing program so that people with disabilities can enjoy the health, fitness and social benefits of recreational and competitive rowing.

In Spring 2010, the coach of the Wheelchair Suns basketball team asked Rio to develop and lead a cross-training program for his athletes. A dedicated group of Rio rowers and other volunteers have come together twice a week to coach these adaptive athletes during workouts using indoor rowing machines (ergometers, or "ergs"). Rio has also partnered with ASU's Center for Adaptive Neural Systems in
a research study to measure mobility, balance and fitness gains from rowing for people with spinal cord injuries.

The next phase of Rio's adaptive program is an on-the-water program so that we can share another benefit of our sport with adaptive rowers: freedom - the freedom of movement that comes from gliding, unconstrained, through the water. We're currently seeking donations to buy and modify boats, oars and seats so that our adaptive rowers can progress from indoor training to on-the-water coached classes and competitive regattas.

Then, we can all row together -- as a true team does.

In rowing,
we adapt the equipment --
not the sport--
so that anyone,
regardless of
any functional limitation,
can enjoy the water.

Our Community Partners
These organizations share our vision of rowing for all. Their support, resources, and guidance have been invaluable as we develop our adaptive program. Thanks so much, all!
