Welcome to the Rio Salado Rowing Club

We're Celebrating 20 Years of Rowing in the Desert!

Since 1991, Rio Salado Rowing Club, a 501(c)3 organization, has worked to develop the sport of rowing in the Arizona desert. Based at Tempe Town Lake, our members come from all over the greater Phoenix area to enjoy rowing's many health, fitness and social benefits. We provide recreational and competitive rowing opportunities for all experience levels -- novice through world-class rowers -- as well as coaching, classes and learn-to-row events. Rowing education is a major focus of our club. We've designed our classes so that rowers receive the individual attention to progress quickly from beginner to rowing independently on the water.

In the past, club activities and programs have focused on the needs of our Masters membership (men & women age 27+). However, in 2010, we expanded our Rio rowing community to include junior (high school-age) rowers through an affiliation with Brophy Crew. We're also partnering with area disability and community organizations to develop "Can Do Crew" -- adaptive rowing for people with functional limitations.

RSRC's boathouse is located on the North side of Tempe Town Lake on the southwest corner of Mill Avenue and Washington/Curry Roads adjacent to the Marquee Theatre and the Rio Salado Operations Center. Parking is available underneath the Loop 202 freeway next to the boat storage area. There are two entrances - Eastbound on Washington just west of the Marquee Theatre, and Southbound on Mill, just south of Washington/Curry. When parking for classes or open row, park under the 202. Do not park over on the Marquee Theater side of the lot or your car may be towed. Click HERE for a Google Map to the boatyard.

RSRC is administered by a seven-member volunteer board of directors that meets monthly. These meetings and the recorded minutes are open to all club members.

Fun Introduction to Rowing Event -- June 2nd on "National Learn-to-Row Day"!
Learn why “Rowing in the Desert is Hot!” at Rio’s upcoming FIRE event!

Rio Salado Rowing Club is hosting a Fun Introduction to Rowing Event (FIRE) on Saturday, June 2nd from 8:30-10:30 AM. FIRE is an opportunity for adults to experience the sport of rowing. Rio members lead you in a short workout on an indoor rowing machine (called an “erg” in the rowing world) and present an overview of its proper use. You also take a tour of the boatyard, check out rowing equipment – and, try some actual rowing yourself during a short ride in a racing shell on Tempe Town Lake.

FIRE registration fee is $25, and the event is limited to 15 participants, so please register online to reserve your spot. And, don’t forget to wear workout clothes and shoes/sandals that can get wet. To register, go to the "Classes" page and click on "F.I.R.E".

For your training pleasure, "The Erg Doctor" has compiled a set of erg workouts. The workouts are varied. Each one specifies a goal for the workout and describes the workout plan, the warm-up, the body of the workout, a cool down, as well as an additional workout idea to do later in the week. These can be found on the website.

To access these workouts, do your member login. If you have not done this, create a username and password and you will be good to go. If you do not wish to purchase a membership at this time, select "no thank you" and create a member profile. Once logged in, the Main Menu will have an option "Curriculum and Erg Training." When you click this, you will see workouts briefly described. Clicking on a workout will open up the full information. It will be important for you to open up the first choice "Rowing Format...." so that you can understand the format of each workout as well as the intensity guide used. Train on!!

Many Rio members and coaches have been in conversation and study to reformat the class progression we now use. There is logic to the course progression that we offer. We begin all our students with lessons on sculling technique. Sculling offers the rower two oars and an opportunity to begin in single person boats. By learning how to scull first, the rower can better understand the role that balance and rhythm play in developing confidence on the water. As the rower develops competency in single sculling, more learning opportunities await.
